Aurora Mental Health Center
Educational Community Garden
Over the last several years, Hampden Academy at the Aurora Mental Health Center has emerged as a leader in implementing horticultural therapy in an institutional setting. Ivy Street Design is proud to have partnered with AuMHC and Denver Urban Gardens to bring an educational community garden to south Aurora. Permaculture design informed the placement of an outdoor classroom, 18 raised vegetable beds, a fruit tree orchard, and medicinal herb garden. Considerations of local wildlife and ADA accessibility were central to the inclusive nature of the project, as were the unique needs of an adjacent senior community. The Ivy Street Design master plan was ultimately used to apply for grant funding, recruit volunteer participation and source materials for the collaborative construction effort of this educational community garden.
