Situated on a tree-lined, historically designated South University Boulevard in Denver, Saint Michaels found itself in dire need of a face-lift, as little had changed at the church landscape for years. Ivy Street Design brought the Spanish Mission-style architecture of the church to life by removing two large but declining Colorado Blue Spruces to create an open courtyard, perfect for the informal church community gatherings. Architectural compatibility drove the design approach for this traditional church community. Perfectly matching antique brick and complimentary commemorative pavers created a traditional feeling consistent with the historic church. Safety also proved a critical concern. Ivy Street Design developed an ADA-accessible entrance; custom hand rail decorated with the Anglican cross and integrated subtle safety lighting throughout. Last but not least, a complete remodel of the grounds reduced water use with more efficient irrigation and water-wise plantings, while maintaining the long-established quality the congregation honors.
